About this dataset
The Child Care Subsidy Program (CCSP) helps eligible families pay for child care across the Commonwealth. The program is overseen by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and administered by the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) in partnership with local departments of social services. Providers that service children enrolled in the program are referred to as "Subsidy Vendors."
This support makes it easier for parents to work, go to school or take part in training. The program also supports children’s growth and learning by helping families choose safe, quality care. Families receive guidance to make informed choices about child care providers. Financial help is available to families with limited income so they can access affordable care. This support helps families move toward stability and independence. Some families receive child care support while they are in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. This can allow parents to participate in Virginia Initiative for Education and Work (VIEW) activities, education programs, and training programs. Child care support may also be available for families involved in child protective services.
Transitional child care provides up to 12 months of child care support following closure of the TANF case as long as clients are working and meet income guidelines. Families who are not in the TANF program may still qualify for this child care support. These families may pay a portion of the child care cost, while the program covers the rest. Local agencies receive funding to help manage the program. This includes reviewing applications and determining eligibility.
