U.S Department of Transportation

Updated Oct 25, 2026

About this dataset

Metadata for Coastal Ecological Unusually Sensitive Areas (Coastal Eco USAs). These are high consequence areas, as defined in 49 CFR § 195.450 and 195.6 (b) (6)-(7), representing coastal beaches (any land between the high- and low-water marks of certain coastal waters) and certain coastal waters (the territorial sea of the United States; the Great Lakes and their connecting waters; and the marine and estuarine waters of the United States up to the head of tidal influence). This data is compiled from publicly available GIS data sources from NOAA (specifically the Sea Level Rise dataset and Clean Water Act dataset) and the EPA (specifically the Estuary Data Mapper dataset) and thus available to the public. Data representing Ecological USAs as defined in 49 CFR § 195.450 (b) (1)-(5) are mapped separately and available only to hazardous liquid pipeline operators and regulators.
