NSSP Commercial Laboratory Data for COVID, FLU and RSV

About this dataset

The purpose of the National Syndromic Surveillance Program (NSSP) Commercial Laboratory Data source is to improve national situational awareness for conditions of interest to public health through enhanced laboratory data sharing between the CDC and external partners. Data are provided by five participating commercial laboratory companies operating in the United States: Labcorp, Quest Diagnostics, Aegis Sciences, ARUP Laboratories, and Perimeter (formerly Ginkgo Bioworks).

The NSSP Commercial Laboratory Test Volumes and Results by State - COVID-19, Flu, RSV dataset is a subset of the NSSP Commercial Laboratory Data source and includes test results for SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19), influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Not all participating laboratories contribute data for every condition. The volume and geographic distribution of reported testing may vary by laboratory, condition, jurisdiction, and time period. These data are aggregated across the commercial laboratories and reported at the state level. The period covered by this dataset begins on 10/4/2024, and the data will be updated once per week on Wednesdays. Data are submitted to CDC daily and processed typically within 24 hours using condition-specific inclusion criteria and result inclusion rules. Where sufficient information is available, multiple messages associated with the same specimen or accession are consolidated to present the most up-to-date version of the test results. Participating laboratories report results at the accession or specimen level rather than at the individual patient level; because multiple specimens may be drawn from a single patient for a given test, these records should not be interpreted as counts of unique persons tested.

This dataset includes laboratory testing for SARS CoV-2, influenza, and RSV. All conditions are represented using nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs), including polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and other molecular amplification methods. Percent positivity is calculated by dividing the number of positive NAATs by the total number of NAATs classified as either positive or negative for a given condition, then multiplying by 100 [(# of positive NAAT tests / total positive or negative NAAT tests) x 100]. Specimens for which the results are classified as unknown, indeterminate, or uninterpretable, or the test was not performed, are excluded from the calculation.
• Result inclusion: For each pathogen and associated laboratory test, specific LOINC codes and rules are used to select and synthesize laboratory results for inclusion in the dataset. Where sufficient information is available, multiple messages associated with the same specimen or accession may be consolidated to reduce duplicate reporting.
• Reporting of test results: Only test results that can be classified as positive or negative are included in applicable analyses. Unknown, indeterminate, or uninterpretable results are excluded.
• Data aggregation: Results are aggregated by week based on specimen collection date. As additional results are reported, values for prior reporting periods may change.
• Suppression: To reduce instability in estimates due to small numbers, counts and percent positivity are suppressed when the denominator (i.e., tests performed) or the number of positive tests is fewer than 10 tests. Zeros are not suppressed.
• Geography: State is assigned using the patient’s zip code of residence, or, where that is not available, the ordering provider’s zip code.

Details by Condition Condition:
COVID-19 - NAAT only: These commercial laboratory SARS CoV-2 data include both pathogen-specific molecular assays and results generated as part of respiratory pathogen panels. These data are intended to be used as a supplement to existing systems displayed on the NCIRD PRISM page. CDC recommends using complementary systems such as National Re
