About this dataset
This dataset includes the number and rate of drug overdose emergency department (ED) visits among Virginians by year, drug type, geography, and demographics.
Geographic location is assigned based on the patient’s residential zip code. A single zip code may span multiple city and county localities in Virginia. If a patient resides in a spanning zip code, the visit is assigned to the locality where the majority of the population resides. To account for zip codes spanning multiple localities, VDH combines certain Virginia city and county localities to calculate visit counts and rates(see below):
Alleghany County & Covington City ; Albemarle County & Charlottesville City ; Augusta County, Staunton City & Waynesboro City ; Chesterfield County & Colonial Heights City ; Frederick County & Winchester City ; Fairfax County, Fairfax City & Falls Church City ; Grayson County & Galax City ; Greensville County & Emporia City ; Henry County & Martinsville City ; Montgomery County & Radford City ; Pittsylvania County & Danville City ; Prince George County, Hopewell City & Petersburg City ; Prince William County, Manassas City & Manassas Park City ; Roanoke County, Roanoke City & Salem City ; Rockingham County & Harrisonburg City ; Rockbridge County, Buena Vista City & Lexington City ; Southampton County & Franklin City ; Washington County & Bristol City ; Wise County & Norton City .
