VDOT Wildlife Carcass Removal Tracking PV

Datathon 2025

Updated Oct 17, 2026

About this dataset

This feature layer contains point locations and related information for wildlife carcasses removed from roads maintained by contracted maintenance forces in certain VDOT Districts. Contractors conduct maintenance activities such as wildlife carcass removal on all VDOT interstates and select other roads. Wildlife carcass removal information from roads that are maintained by VDOT maintenance forces is not included in this dataset.<div><br /></div><div>The layer does not represent a complete dataset for all roads in Virginia. The number of Districts with maintenance contractors that participate in this form of data collection may increase over time. Data collection began in VDOT’s Culpeper and Staunton Districts in 2021. Time periods for which data are collected are not always continuous. There are occasional periods in which no data was collected, typically during transitions from one contract maintenance force to another.</div><div><br /></div><div>Wildlife carcass removals in the dataset were identified in two ways: (1) contract maintenance staff received a notification from VDOT requesting a carcass removal and (2) contract crews observed a carcass on or along the roadside while driving a routine route for maintenance activities.</div><div><br /></div><div>In providing this web map, we assume no responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of the data. In the process of recording and compiling the data, some deletions and/or omissions of data may occur and VDOT is not responsible for any such occurrences. Please be advised that, under Title 23 United State Code – Section 409, this crash information cannot be used in discovery or as evidence in a Federal or State court proceeding or considered for other purposes in any action for damages against VDOT or the State of Virginia arising from any occurrence at the location identified.</div>
